Claresse is a catfish, so a freshwater fish, but does not appear in the wild. Claresse is a cross between the Clarias gariepinus (African Sharptooth Catfish) and the Heterobranchus Longifilis (Vundu). These two multifalls, originally from Africa, are crossed, resulting in the cladresse. One of the parents, the Clarias, has been successfully grown in the Netherlands for at least 30 years. By crossing the female Heterobranchus with the male Clarias in 2006, a new high-quality consumer fish was created, which was named 'cladresse'. After a strict procedure, the government agreed that cladresse may be grown in the Netherlands.
