This cockle was picked by hand from the Wadden Sea and is watered down in Zeeland. It is a beautiful shellfish that is also found in the European coastal waters, in addition to the Wadden Sea. Famous are the cockles from the British waters, which are often large. Smaller specimens often come from French waters. It is also known as the heart shell and has a well-formed thick shell with deep ribs and can be 6 cm in size. The rings on the shell show how old it is. The Waddenzee cockle is very different in color compared to its counterparts from other parts of Europe. The Wadden Sea Coccle has more shades of gray. The Netherlands has been one of the largest producers of nickel in Europe until now. The Wadden Sea is now a protected nature area and therefore large commercialële kotters are no longer allowed.
