Cold smoked sprat fillet. The back of the sprat is blue-green, the flanks silver-colored. Sprot has a length between 10 and 17 cm. The sprat occurs along the Atlantic coasts, from Northern Morocco to Scandinavia. Sprot can also be found in the North Sea. The sprats live in schools to a depth of 150 meters ( the pelagic zone ). Sprot ( Sprattus sprattus ) is a fish in the family ( Clupeidae ) and therefore closely related to the pegs, but remains much smaller and lives shorter. They often swim with young herring in the same schools and are also caught together. The sprat is smoked, but by far the majority of the catch ( 90% ) is fished by the Danish industrial fishermen for the production of fish meal and fish oil.
